Solitude in DC Oct 16th, Stitches East Conn. Oct 21-23

Greetings!
It is starting to get light outside…and I’m antsy. Gotta get back out to the dye pots. Only a week until Sue and I, with able assistants Sue Burke and Evelyn Carr, head up to Hartford Connecticut for our first Stitches East. There is a lot to do. Next week I will send some photos of the new colors, but today, I beg indulgence. I wanted to show and tell a little of the parallel world of yarn I peaked into in Morocco.

We got back last Thursday, and I tried to send an email on Friday morning. Well I blew it and it never went out…it is on the blog though. If you are interested in seeing the goats in the trees, check it out. My sister and I, along with about five other people were taking a really wonderful photo workshop with Kay Chernush (great photographer from Arlington, VA) in Marrakesh, and the day I took these photos we were with the group in the Medina (old city) and the souk (market). It all happened so fast. Now I wish I could ask more questions and spend more time…especially about the dyes, because they were all different from what I know. And the yarns don’t look like natural dye colors I’m familiar with.

But there sure is something familiar about piles of yarn…dyed and undyed all over the place, crowding you out of house and working space. The next photo I saw though made me appreciate how much working space I have. I think I was the only one of the group that noticed this little one person workspace. Not only is the photo dark, so was the space. I don’t think there was any electricity and it was only as big as you can see. The floor started about thigh high above the street and maybe 6 feet wide and 8 feet deep. See the bicycle spinning wheel and skein winder behind it? phew. They are producing well though and it would be fun to sit and spin and watch the show of people, donkeys, scooters, and everything you could imagine walk/race by as you worked.

Now I’m back to our own wonderful Dupont FreshFarm market. Looks like we will have another lovely Sunday. Sue and I will be there with bells on and we will bring:
The Dorset sock kits AND the solid skeins of Dorset sock yarn (not on the web site)
Icelandic (some nice recently dyed colors in our North American nature dyes)
Romney semi-worsted, a great aran weight for warm scarves, hats and sweaters for impending cold weather
Targhee 3-ply, semi-solids
Tunis/Alpaca marled yarn, also nature dyed
Alpaca/Merino lace weight
Quilt batts (tell your quilting friends, we haven’t plugged into the quilting world yet)
my Solitude handspun
and honey!

If there is something else you would like us to bring for you, let me know (by Friday please): f-fsolitude@mindspring.com
Thank you!
Gretchen
